Many major smartphones are companies are interested in this technology and are launching their new models based on In-display fingerprint sensor like Vivo Vx21, Oneplus 6t, Samsung galaxy s10
There might be a Question in your mind, What’s In-display fingerprint scanner & how it is different form Under-display fingerprint scanner,
The simple answer is-
The In-display fingerprint sensor is a sensor, which is placed inside the display screen, for this the display screen must be made of OLED or AMOLED where there is no backlight, on the screen
It is sometimes also called Under-display fingerprint sensor or On screen fingerprint . There’s no difference between them both term denotes the same thing. that is the capability to scan fingerprint through the screen
Vivo X21 is the first smartphone to have an in-display fingerprint sensor, in the early of 2018,
Types of In-display Fingerprint Sensor:
- Optical-based (like vivo x21, OnePlus6t…)
- Ultrasonic (like Samsung Galaxy S10)
How does Optical based In-display work
you might be thinking
How does a fingerprint unlock work from inside a display screen like magic?
furthermore, this type of in-display technology works only with OLED and AMOLED display, and there is no backlight present, in case of the normal mobile phone where the display is made up of LCD’s, there is backlight present so the display is not transparent.
& for the reason that, the pixels of AMOLED or OLED screen light up by itself & there is a gap between these pixels.
The work of optical In-display fingerprint sensor becomes easy. And due to the tiny holes in AMOLED or OLED display, It captures the photo of fingerprint and makes a 2d map of your fingerprint.
Talking about In-display fingerprint sensor (Optical based), It came out in early 2018 by Vivo, It was an amazing technology but
limitations of In-display Fingerprint unlock (Optical based):
- when your fingers are wet, or when the display screen has some water on it.
- When your fingers get stuff like sauce or chutney, I think it didn’t like saucy fingers
- If your fingers get dust, like by eating chips. the display didn’t work easily
And some of its cons are:
- it works
smoothyin sharp Scratches and even if the display screen is scratched with sandpaper.
- It works very well in any tempered glass, even the thicker one
- & over the times, the In-display touch id becomes fast because of its machine learning algorithms
